If, like me, you have children requiring home schooling, then be honest, it’s a steep learning curve for them and us. Also, I don’t know about yours, but my (slightly older) kids have heroes and role models who influence them. In normal times, these may be rock stars, rappers, Vloggers or sports stars, but just now, the biggest and most obvious heroes are all those superb people working in the NHS and the supporting businesses and services that sustain them, plus all the other essential workers who are striving to keep the country going.
Other heroes who may be a bit below the radar are all those scientists, engineers and fabricators who are switching their skills to the production of ventilators and other essential medical equipment. We know that the space race enthused a generation to become scientists and engineers, so why not gently steer your home schooling to include some examples of these modern-day engineering and scientific heroes of our age? And, while you are at it, also encourage them to become nurses, doctors, physios and all the other professions allied to medicine whose skills we may need in the future if this sort of thing rears its ugly head once more…
