We know that no-one comes to the north-east of Scotland for the weather (although, as we’ve written before on our blog pages, it’s surprisingly sunny), but the variety and changeability of the climate, often with the proverbial “four seasons in one day” is a big attraction for many. So is working in a university where there are many departments that are highly rated by the students – like this one, as described by Gareth…
Name: Gareth Haining
Job Title: Lecturer in Diagnostic Radiography
Department: School of Health Sciences
What attracted you to come to work at RGU?
I am an Aberdeen native and studied here both as an undergraduate and postgraduate. I take great pride in the city and its institutions and feel very privileged to work here. My department has been rated highly by students recently and I’m excited to play my part in keeping us there.
Describe working at RGU in three words.
Innovative,
Encouraging,
Refreshing.
Tell us something that has surprised you about working at RGU.
The campus, I have visited for various events over the years but had barely scratched the surface. I particularly like the terraces and views over the Dee and the ability to walk around and take it all in.
Describe living in North East of Scotland in three words.
- Weather – The three words could be cold, windy and damp or warm, glorious and beautiful. Often all in the same day.
- Humour – Aberdonians tend to be hard working and keep themselves to themselves but there is a fabulous humour and local personality just below the surface.
- Scenery – Whether it’s the Grampian Mountains, the rolling Dee and Don valleys, the coastal towns and villages or the sparkling granite buildings all round Aberdeen. There is something here for everyone.
What are your favorite leisure/non-work activities and how well are they catered for in and around Aberdeen?
Motorcycling, some of the most stunning roads in the country are in reach from here. Sailing, inland and coastal options and Running, I love to run round this city, the beach, the parks or along the rivers.
What is your favourite place to go out for a meal in the North east and why?
A tie between 8848 in Union Street as the food there is lovely without being too strong and the staff are wonderful, and Café Andaluz as the food is great value for money.
What would you say to anyone who is contemplating a move to RGU to persuade them it’s the right career move?
There has never been a better time to join a forward thinking, outward looking establishment determined to build on an already sound reputation in both private industry and public service.
