Elina Zalkalne

We love these interviews.  No-one is obliged to take part and as a result we get a diverse range of opinions and comments about everything to do with working in Aberdeen and NE Scotland, as well as life and work at RGU.  Some of the interviews are with people who have been here for some time: others are from new members of staff like Elina, who, we are delighted to say, seems captivated by the area and the university.

Describe RGU in three words?
Diverse,
Engaging,
Innovative.

What do you like most about living and working in Aberdeen?
Oh gosh, where do I start? Aberdeen has that perfect mix of modern and historical culture. I love that I’m never too far from a run on the beach or bagging a munro. The wonderfully friendly and accepting locals. Funnily enough – the weather, which is never as cold and rainy as people seem to think and even the ever persistent seagulls.

What is your favourite place to go for a meal or a drink?
Foodstory and Avo – perfect for vegetarians and vegans! Books and Beans is also a lovely place to chill with first rate food and second hand books.

What leisure facilities in and around the city do you make most use of?
I’m almost a permanent fixture in the Linx ice rink and when I’m not skating I’ll be at the Snap Fitness gym classes which are tons of fun. And when I’m too sore to move I’ll pop by the main library to pick out some fun reads.

What is your favourite trip out of town – where in the surrounding countryside do you most enjoy spending a couple of hours away from work?
Anywhere with a castle or a loch. Burn O’Vat, Loch Lee, Loch Muick and Castle Fraser have been some of my favourite ventures so far.

What would you say to anyone – at any level – thinking about coming to work at RGU to persuade them it’s the right career move?
Take that step and make the move – you’ll discover for yourself what a fantastic place to work this is. Something is always happening – whether it’s quiz nights or races; there’s something for everyone, on a beautiful campus and in an inclusive, friendly and supportive environment. I felt right at home from day one!
